Completed Projects - Svalyava Baby Orphanage 2007 Windows Project

Funding Goal: $11,850
Raised: $11,850

In the sick room of the Svalyava Baby Orphanage, the windows and doors were rotten and broken. Throughout the rest of the orphanage, windows were "insulated" by shoving cotton into the gaping holes surrounding the frame, many had broken glass and were encased in rotten wood.

OBS partnered with EcoClub of Ukraine to complete a massive window replacement/repair project throughout the orphanage, in time for the Winter of 2007. The windows in the worst condition were replaced, and numerous others fixed/insulated.

In August 2007, 15-20 volunteers arrived in Svalyava for 2 weeks worth of work. Funds were raised to feed the volunteers, to purchase repair material, and to cover the cost of replacement for the sick room windows and doors.

Budget for Repairs: $11,850 (USD)

  • Insulation (m) = $1,250

  • Glass (m2) = $1,800

  • Wood (m3) = $260

  • Tools (hummers, screwdrivers, brushes, etc.) = $300
  • Replacement Windows & Doors for Sick Room = $5,220

  • Transportation (wood, glass and materials) = $100

  • Transportation (volunteers and staff, 2 trips) = $400

  • Meals (15 people x 14 days x $12/day) = $2,520
